Year 3 Celebrations

AUTUMN TERM

We have been learning about Extreme Earth. We made tornadoes in a bottle, took part in an earthquake evacuation and even made a volcano erupt. In English, we researched tsunamis and wrote non-chronological reports on them. In Science, we learnt about different types of rocks and soil. We made a sedimentary rock from a maoam sweet then, applied heat and pressure to turn it into a metamorphic rock. We also created the different layers of soil using yogurt, sprinkles and cheerios. We made our own fossils using clay in Science.

We received an exciting letter from Sven the Toymaker! We researched old and new toys as this would help us to create a prototype. Then we designed and created a cam mechanism toy. We had to use a saw to cut the dowel and a hot glue gun to stick pieces of the toy together. In Science, we made a compass! We had to use a piece of cork and a needle, it then spun on the water to face north! We also had a Santa Run where we got to wear a festive headpiece and drink hot chocolate in forest school!

SPRING TERM

During this half term, Year 3 children have been studying the Stone Age. They have engaged in problem-solving activities to explore survival in this era. Additionally, they have created double-page spread reports on Stone Age food including: how they found their food and what they would have eaten. They have created Stone Age cave paintings that tell stories of great hunts.

In science, we have been learning about animals including humans. Children have constructed models of human skeletons and labelled them. We have made models of working muscles in an arm and a hand. They have looked at the different food groups and how to have a healthy diet.
