Year 1 Celebrations

AUTUMN TERM

Our first term in 12M has been full of exciting experiences and valuable learning opportunities. We’ve had the pleasure of visiting forest school, conducting fascinating science experiments, and exploring creativity through a computerised music day. A highlight for all was a special visit from Florence Nightingale.

Inspired by the story ‘Lost and Found’, we have researched what it would be like to be an explorer. Some of us have embraced the spirit of exploration, imagining what it would be like to visit the South Pole - though some of us are keener than others to brave the cold! Overall, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed our learning this term and have worked incredibly hard throughout.

SPRING TERM

As part of our Explorers topic, we have been learning about the conditions in the South Pole. Learning that temperatures can be incredibly cold, we wanted to find out the quickest way to melt ice as this could be really useful for rescuing animals like penguins.

We tested a range of methods and discovered that running water helped the process the most. We think this is because the running water speeds up the melting process, especially since it’s constantly replenishing the warmth around the ice cube. We found that the ice cube left outside took longer due to the colder air. We all agreed that being a scientist was fun and we are looking forward to our next experiment!

SUMMER TERM

Year 1 have had a busy start to the Summer Term already! We had a great time watching the 'Tiny Orchestra' at Leigh Beck, it was interesting seeing all the different instruments and we enjoyed listening to music. Visiting our friends in a different school was very exciting and for some children this was the 'best trip ever'.

The following day we started our new topic 'Bug Safari'. We became bug hunters for the afternoon and looked for different minibeasts in their natural habitat. This was lots of fun and we could not believe how many different bugs we found in our garden area. We are now very excited about the visitors coming into school next week with even more minibeasts for us to see.
